Book Review of ” Tour de Trace” by Sharon L. Dean

Blurb

The younger cyclists who signed up for camping and biking along Mississippi’s Natchez Trace may think of Susan Warner as old. But she is no Miss Marple or Jessica Fletcher. Retired from teaching, she sports a lavender streak in her silver hair and, though she has the slowest mph, she can cover the distance. But when she steps out of her tent the first morning, only ten of her fellow cyclists appear. The eleventh has left a note saying that she will return later.
Later never happens. Instead, the riders discover the cyclist’s body stretched crucifixion style on an ancient Indian Mound.
With each turn of her bicycle wheel, Susan searches for the killer. Is it an ex-husband? The owner of a decrepit bed and breakfast? A snake handler? Or is it one of the cyclists? Her ride along the Natchez Trace pits New Englander Susan against an unfamiliar landscape and a murderer.

Genre: Cozy Mystery
My Review

Tour d trace is a cozy mystery series book. The theme is interesting. the characters are defined. The relationship between mother and daughter was beautifully described. You could easily relate to the experience between them.

But it feels like the narration slacks somewhere in between. The story is properly laid out but it drags a lot toward the middle. There are a lot of points where the story could have been tighten up. Many times I could easily skip a few pages and still understand where the story was going. Many unnecessary explanation and examples with given which could have been avoided.

The mystery in itself was nice to read and ended with a nice closure, however if it was shorter, it would have been a better reading experience. Overall theme is good and is a perfect read for fast readers who can skip read through the story. 3.5 stars for the book

Book Review of “Aries Appointment (Celestial Mystery Book 1)” by Kathy T. Kale

Blurb

Four years after her baby is kidnapped from a Miami oceanfront estate, a grieving mother takes desperate action. Enter Morgan Sterling, a fourth generation astrologer who helps lost clients find their way. Teaming up with Daniel Kane, a blundering police detective, the pair track a cold twisted trail where nothing is as it seems, and facts are muddied by rumors and lies. Crisscrossing South Florida, the investigators stir up secrets like a stick stirs snakes. Along the way, the duo reopen old wounds that land them in the pit of their own darkness. The Aries Appointment is about a search for meaning and truth on many levels. It is the first novel in the Celestial Mystery series.

Genre: Cozy Mystery
My Review
The entire book has been great reading experience. Even though there are a lot of cases in between of Morgan which is not related to the case or incidents with neighbors which are also not related, they still give a nice background to the character and the story. You cannot help like the lead character and also gain a slightest insight into astrology.
There were slight instances where certain story lines were kept open and left to explore. But then considering it is part 1 of Cosmic Mystery series, I am hoping for something more to come up soon. I am in love with Morgan and absolutely looking forward to more of her adventures with Daniel.
The story does not lack anything at all. It is perfection in its definition. A wonderful read through and through, it is a must read for any mystery lover and / or astrological fiction lover.

Book Review of “Soldiers of Fortune (Miss Fortune Mystery #6)” by Jana Deleon

Blurb

When Celia Arceneaux was elected mayor of Sinful, Louisiana, Fortune Redding expected trouble. The woman has an unmatched talent for making the worst of any situation, especially if it means getting revenge on her sworn enemies Ida Belle and Gertie.

At the Fourth of July celebration, an explosion rocks Sinful and it’s not from fireworks. Most people assume it was a moonshine still, but when evidence points to a meth lab deep in the bayous of Sinful, Fortune realizes how dire the situation is for the tiny town. With Carter on medical leave and no one left at the sheriff’s department who can handle the investigation, Fortune, Ida Belle, and Gertie decide to take matters into their own hands.

This is (another) mission for Swamp Team 3.

Genre: Cozy Mystery

My Review

This time Jana DeLeon came back and came back strong. After the two previous books having slightly slacked in story line, this one is brilliantly amusing and adventurous to cope up with the series. Celia has gone far too much ahead with her Mayorship and the new Sheriff is also up to no good. But when a meth lab threatens to open up in Sinful, the Swamp Snipers take it upon themselves to clean the city. Gertie, Ida Belle and Fortune are truly hilarious all through the story. Not even once does it go slow at all.

Right from start to end, it is fun filled and entertaining. It takes mark on all the parameters to be measured. The story line is beautiful, the characters are wonderful, the story is hilarious and the mystery is captivating. A beautiful cozy mystery

Book Review of “Clipped” by Patricia Curren

Blurb

Fourteen-year-old Kendra Morgan finds herself in the fight of her life when she sees her murdered friends hair clip in a strangers pocket and becomes consumed with finding the killer.

Genre: Mystery / Thriller / Psychological Thriller / Suspense
My Review
The story was catching right from the first go. Kendra Morgan is not a regular 14-year-old. She is mature for her age and also adventurous. Her dedication and enthusiasm with she and her friend goes along the mystery brings back the memory of Nancy Drew or Enid Blyton series very fondly. The story is engrossing right from the first page.
The character building and story telling is an art which Patricia truly gets. The suspense builds all through the book and never once does it slack anywhere. The tension is built throughout the book with slight humor and enough energy to keep the reader hooked. The climax at the end and the epilogue is brilliantly woven and smartly written. There is enough creep to keep you engaged but solved pretty fast to make you feel good about the character and the story.
Patricia Curren is a brilliant writer and an epic story-teller. I am definitely looking forward to more of her books.
Here are some of the notes I made while reading the book
Almost 30% down in the book and the story is really interesting. Two 14-year-old detectives and there is also a side track from the killer’s perspective. Although it’s a typical way of writing, the story is interesting. A bit of a Nancy Drew in a modern way. The formatting initially is slightly off but that might be because the format of the book was changed to suit my e-reader. But the story is engrossing right from the first page
Really brilliant story. It was catchy till the very last page. No slack at all anywhere. The character building, the story line, narration, everything felt perfect. Cannot believe this is a debut novel.

Book Review of “Gator Bait (Miss Fortune Mystery #5)” by Jana Deleon

Blurb

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the fifth book in the hilarious Miss Fortune series.

Things are starting to look up for Fortune Redding. Even though her life was at stake, the CIA assassin had balked at taking on a new identity in Sinful, Louisiana. But instead of hating it like she’d thought she would, Fortune now has friends she cares about and just finished up an incredible first date with the sexiest deputy in the state. Sure, there’s been a murder or two that she’s gotten mixed up in since she arrived in town, but she’s hoping all of that is behind her.

But when someone almost kills Deputy Carter LeBlanc, Fortune tosses her dreams of peace and quiet into the muddy bayou and shifts back into being the deadly trained professional that she is. With the help of Ida Belle and Gertie, Fortune launches a manhunt, intending to find a killer before he tries again.

Genre: Cozy Mystery
My Review

Carter is attacked!!! What more of an excuse do you want to push yourself deep into the investigation? Fortune is on her 5th week at Sinful and yet another mystery comes up to her doorsteps. This time the story definitely takes a slack. All the other stories still had a lot of punch to it, this one slacks a lot. The only saving grace it has is the relationship between Fortune and Carter.

Other than that, the story can be read only for the humor and nothing else. There is no thrill, no action, just a story which goes along just because there is a book to go. Fortune is a trained assassin but just a few weeks in a city and she slacks a lot. That is so much hard to believe. You cannot just lose all your years’ of experience in just a few days of relaxation, where you are still working on so many mysteries. It is too hard to believe.

I hope Jana comes back the next time with a pack of punch to rebuild Fortune for us.

Book Review of “Swamp Sniper (Miss Fortune Mystery #3)” by Jana Deleon

Blurb

rom New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the third book in the Miss Fortune Mystery series.
When only a crack shot will do…
In the two weeks CIA assassin Fortune Redding has been hiding in Sinful, Louisiana, she’s been harassed, poisoned, and shot at…and that was the easy part. But now, she’s about to face her biggest challenge since setting foot in the tiny bayou town.
When mayoral candidate Ted Williams is murdered, everyone is surprised. Ted was a blowhole and a Yankee, but those usually weren’t good reasons to kill someone. When Sinful Ladies Society leader Ida Belle becomes the lead suspect in the crime, Fortune knows she’s got to solve a murder and save one of the only friends she’s ever had.
But as the investigation begins, more and more secrets surface, and Fortune realizes that sometimes nothing is as it seems.

Genre: Cozy Mystery
My Review

It is just her 3rd week in Sinful but Fortune Redding cannot keep away from trouble. This time it is Ida Bella who needs saving and Fortune does not think twice before jumping full fledged into the fight.

The 3rd book in the series is just as hilarous as all the previous books. With the death of a Mayor candidate, the suspicion rises on the contesting candidate Ida Bella. Fortune and Gertie has no choice this time. However, this time the story drags a lot. Yes, the antics are there, so are the humor. But the thrill is not there as much as the previous stories.

However it is still a fun read and can go ahead just because you simply love Fortune and her Swamp Team a lot. A 3.5 stars story

Book Review of “Lethal Bayou Beauty (Miss Fortune Mystery #2)” by Jana Deleon

Blurb

No one in Sinful liked Pansy Arceneaux, but who hated her enough to kill her?

When aspiring actress Pansy Arceneaux returns to Sinful, Louisiana to head up the beauty pageant portion of the Summer Festival, CIA assassin Fortune Redding knows she’s in for trouble. Her undercover identity as a former beauty queen make Fortune the perfect choice to chair the event with Pansy, but Pansy’s abrasive personality make it impossible to get through a single rehearsal without a fight.

When Pansy turns up dead, Fortune is the prime suspect.

Armed with only her wits and two conniving seniors referred to locally as The Geritol Mafia, Fortune launches an investigation to find the real killer before her cover is blown.

Genre: Cozy Mystery
My Review

Fortune Redding returns with her 2nd week at Sinful and yet another murder. This time, Pansy is dead and Celia is determined to pin it on Fortune. The mystery is tricky this time too, but the humor never falters. Jana Deleon has a brilliant art of mixing mystery and humor in just the right proportions so as to not have too much of either.

The characters of Fortune, Ida Bella, Gertie and Marie is fabulous and engaging. You cannot help but fall in love with the Sinful Ladies Society (SLS). The 2nd book in the series hints just enough to make the readers wonder if Carter and Fortune will end up together. They will, of course, make an amazing couple, if they can just keep from stepping on each others’ toes.

Yet another fabulous read of Miss Fortune Series.

Book Review of “Louisiana Longshot (Miss Fortune Mystery #1)” by Jana Deleon

Blurb

It was a hell of a longshot…

CIA Assassin Fortune Redding is about to undertake her most difficult mission ever–in Sinful, Louisiana.

With a leak at the CIA and a price on her head by one of the world’s largest arms dealers, Fortune has to go off grid, but she never expected to be this far out of her element. Posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian in a small, bayou town seems worse than death to Fortune, but she’s determined to fly below the radar until her boss finds the leak and puts the arms dealer out of play.

Unfortunately, she hasn’t even unpacked a suitcase before her newly-inherited dog digs up a human bone in her backyard. Thrust into the middle of a bayou murder mystery, Fortune teams up with a couple of seemingly-sweet old ladies whose looks completely belie their hold on the little town. To top things off, the handsome local deputy is asking her too many questions. If she’s not careful, this investigation may blow her cover and get her killed.

Armed with her considerable skills and a group of old ladies referred to by locals as The Geritol Mafia, Fortune has no choice but to solve the murder before it’s too late.

Genre: Cozy Mystery
My Review

Cozy Mysteries are a fun read because you know you can expect humor and the mystery will be light hearted enough to let you enjoy the ride. But Fortune Redding series is really a different type of Cozy Mystery. Because a huge arms dealer has set his eyes on Fortune to kill, she is forced to go underground to a sleepy town in Lousiana called Sinful. But when she tumbles upon a bone right on the first day of her arrival, the story picks up big time for the trained assassin.

The story is really humorous with various antics from Ida Bella and Gertie which Fortune is forced to be a part of (and enjoys playing it nonetheless). The mystery is anything but slow. There is enough tension to keep on the pages and just the right amount of humor to unwind you while you read.

The first book of Miss Fortune series is truly a page turner with the amazing trick to unwind you as well. A must read for all the readers who are stressed in their daily lives. Read it before sleeping. You are assured a peaceful and happy sleep, if only you could put it down for enough time to get some sleep, that is. Surely a 5 starer
